It was better for gunplay, and worse for stealth. Far Cry 5 gave you a blunt weapon instead of a machete which was less satisfying, and no jungle cover. Far Cry to me is more about stealth and survival, at least in the early stages. I didn’t like 5 as much because what made it different also made it feel less like a Far Cry game. Some even go so far as to say the other games didn’t have good gunplay (maybe with the exception of 6).

It’s different in many ways, but from my experience and what I see on this subreddit a lot is that people like it for its gunplay. (Edit: the shift, not the reception itself) I wonder if a different audience ended up finding it and liking it.
